Vincent Léchenne spent enough seasons on the ice at Saignelégier as both player and coach that he is a notable figure in the club's history.

None of that was there at the start. In February 1958, Ernest Schweizer Sr. and Alphonse Miserez pooled 600 francs for skates and sticks and entered a team, Hockey-Club Saignelégier, in the third league, then the fifth tier of Swiss hockey. Schweizer became its first president. The club played outdoors, clearing the ice by hand, until the absence of a covered rink pushed it to Porrentruy for home games in 1974. The move into the newly built Centre de Loisirs the following year, with its artificial surface, changed that. The club took its current name, HC Franches-Montagnes, in the 1975–76 season.

The club won the Romandy Championship in 1ère Ligue in 2000–01 and again in 2013–14, a season that also carried it to the national promotion final, where it fell short.
