The Stegu Arena, built to replace the old Hala Okrąglak, holds a little over 3,000 people, more than enough for a second team's fixtures, and it doubles as the venue where Gwardia Opole's academy graduates first play in front of a crowd before moving up a floor. That is the arena's real function for Gwardia II: a proving ground rather than a stage.

The reserve side carries no separate identity from the first team; it plays under the same red, white and blue and is folded into what the club calls the Gwardia Opole Academy. Its purpose is development, not silverware, and the record shows it: while the senior team has taken Polish Superliga bronze twice, in 1963/1964 and 2018/2019, and added three Polish Cup bronzes between 2017 and 2019, Gwardia II has none of that. Its job has been to produce the players who do.

That production line has worked. Adam Malcher came through the academy system and went on to win 69 caps for Poland, including a bronze medal at the 2009 World Championship, and Michał Lemaniak and Michał Milewski followed the same route from the reserve setup into the senior national team. That is the measure Gwardia II is judged by, not league position.

All the same, the team competes seriously in its own right, in the lower tiers of Polish handball, in the II Liga's first group. It finished third in a relegation group in 2022/2023, then improved to second in its group in 2024/2025, and is set to compete in the I Liga, the third tier, from the 2025/2026 season. For a reserve side, that is less a breakthrough than confirmation that the pipeline from Opole keeps feeding the level above it.
