Hearts of Oak

The club traces itself to 11 November 1911, a date its founders chose because it fell on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the century's eleventh year, and marked it that same afternoon with a match against a side called Invincibles. It has kept the same name ever since. The oak on the badge carries a heart in its trunk, and the red, yellow and blue of the badge reappear as stripes on the home shirt.

Four years after the continental treble, Hearts of Oak won the first CAF Confederation Cup by beating Asante Kotoko on penalties, 8-7, after the tie had finished level over two legs. Accra has its own smaller version in the Mantse Derby against Great Olympics.

The Accra Sports Stadium, where the club plays, holds 40,000, but it is also where 127 people died in a stampede during a Hearts–Kotoko match in May 2001. Twenty-one league titles and twelve FA Cups sit in the record books.
