The name on ÍR's handball charter belongs to a Norwegian: Andreas J. Berthelsen set the club up in Reykjavík in 1907.

The women's side has spent more of its history chasing the top flight than sitting comfortably in it. Promotion back to the Úrvalsdeild kvenna came in 2017, won on the pitch against KR in the playoffs rather than handed down.

For 900 spectators, home games now happen at Parkethöll, a ground on Skógarsel that opened in August 2022. The club plays in red and white and goes by the short name ÍR.

Reykjavík's handball scene has long turned on a "big four" — ÍR, Valur, Fram and KR — and any meeting between them still gets called a Reykjavík derby.
