No franchise has been part of every Super Bowl since the game began in 1966 and still never reached one — except this one. The Lions have gone the entire modern era of the sport without a single appearance in its championship game.
The oddity sits uneasily against an older record: four NFL Championships, won in 1935, 1952, 1953 and 1957, all of them before the Super Bowl existed. The team that won those titles started life in 1928 as the Portsmouth Spartans, in Portsmouth, Ohio, joined the NFL in 1930, and only became Detroit's team — and the Lions — after the 1934 move.
What has stayed constant is Thanksgiving.
