«Lumberjacks»
Their nearest quarrel came from the Rochester Jeffersons, who beat the Lumberjacks 45–0 on 6 November 1921 at Bay Street Park, in the only NFL game the Tonawanda club ever played. The Buffalo Prospects made up the other side of the rivalry.
The organisation traded under several names before that one game decided its fate. It played as the All-Tonawanda All-Stars when it entered the New York Pro Football League in 1916, became the All-Tonawanda Lumberjacks in 1918, and took the field in the American Professional Football Association in 1920. Jim Thorpe turned out for the club in 1917, and Walter "Tam" Rose, who had founded the team and coached and played halfback for it since 1916, ran it through to the end.
That end came fast. Entered into the NFL for 1921 as the Tonawanda Kardex, sponsored by the American Kardex company, the club lost its only league fixture by 45 points and folded before it could arrange another. Money had run short, opponents were hard to find, and the league's new $1,000 franchise fee for 1922 settled the matter. No team in NFL history has had a shorter run.
Before any of that, in 1913, the Lumberjacks had opened with a game against the Lancaster Malleables.
