Lokomotiv Yaroslavl spent 2025 and 2026 winning the Gagarin Cup, and doing it in back-to-back seasons under Bob Hartley. The run came with the Continental Cup and two straight Opening Cups, a stretch that put the club's name alongside its Superleague titles from 1997, 2002 and 2003, the last two secured under Vladimir Vujtek.

The team's roots go back to 1949, when the railway depot side known as Lokomotiv was put together by coach Oleg Popov. It passed through Trud, Motor and Torpedo before returning to the Lokomotiv name in 2000.

On 7 September 2011 the team's Yak-42D crashed on takeoff from Tunoshna Airport, killing 44 of the 45 on board — Pavol Demitra, Karel Rachunek, Josef Vašíček, Ruslan Salei and Karlis Skrastins among them. Lokomotiv sat out the following KHL season, rebuilt in the second-tier VHL, and came back to the top division in 2013–14.

Games against Salavat Yulaev Ufa carry the label "Honey Battle," and the Volga Derby against Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod and Lada Togliatti gives the season its other fixed points.
