Malmö Redhawks

Gustav Nyquist came through the academy here before he ever played in the National Hockey League. The ice hockey section traces back to 1944 as part of the football club Malmö FF, and it only became its own body on 28 February 1972, split off as Malmö IF once the football side could no longer carry it.

The name has moved twice since: to MIF Redhawks in 1996, then to Malmö Redhawks, though older supporters still shorten it to MIF, a leftover from the 1972 name. Two Swedish Championships came in quick succession, 1992 against Djurgården and 1994 against Modo Hockey, and in between, in 1993, the club beat Dynamo Moscow to the European Cup. The retired numbers belonging to Peter Lindmark, Roger Nordström, Patrik Sylvegård, Jesper Mattsson and Mats Lusth date from that same stretch.

Against Rögle BK, the fixture is billed as the Skånederbyt.

Relegation arrived in 2005, and the Redhawks came back to the SHL in 2015 by winning the HockeyAllsvenskan playoffs.
