Djurgården

Djurgården go into another Swedish Hockey League season still measuring themselves against a title they last lifted in 2001.

The hockey section broke off from the wider sports club in 1922 with help from Wilhelm Arwe, an Olympic player brought in from IK Göta, and lost in the semi-finals of its first championship that same year to Hammarby. The start was shaky enough that the section folded completely in 1934, done in by debt and thin crowds, and did not return until 1938. The first Le Mat Trophy had come earlier, in 1926, with a 7-1 win over Västerås IK.

Home has shifted twice. Johanneshovs isstadion opened in 1955 and later became known as Hovet; in 1989 the team moved into the newly built Ericsson Globe, but the arena's corporate feel never sat well with supporters, and by the 2008-09 season Djurgården were back at Hovet.

Games against AIK still go under their own name, Tvillingderbyt, the Twin Derby, marking the fact that both clubs were founded in the same year, 1891.

Arwe's part in getting the section off the ground in 1922 is rarely mentioned outside that early history.
