Cricket reached what is now Nigeria through the colonial administration. The first recorded international was a match between the Lagos Colony and the Gold Coast Colony on 25 May 1904. It took until 1932 for the Nigeria Cricket Association to organise the expatriate game formally, and until 1957 for that body to merge with an indigenous association, opening the sport to local players. The federation took its current name in 2006, and Nigeria became an independent Associate Member of the International Cricket Council in 2002, after the West Africa Cricket Council was dissolved.

The team plays as the Yellow Greens, a nod to the national flag rather than the board's own official colours, which some records give as green and white. Their T20I side has been built around Sulaimon Runsewe, still the leading run-scorer in the format with 1,424 runs, and around the bowling of Isaac Okpe, whose 84 wickets top the list.

Results have followed a narrow but steady path: the North West Africa Championship in 2007 and 2008, then the ICC Africa Division Two T20 title in 2011, which sent Nigeria to the 2012 World Twenty20. In the World Cricket League they climbed as far as Division Five before being relegated in 2014, then rebuilt enough to win Division Seven in 2013. Games against Ghana carry a name of their own, the "Jollof Derby."

Home matches move between grounds, but the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos only became fit for international cricket in January 2022, when its concrete surface was replaced with a ten-strip turf wicket. It waited until October 2023, against Rwanda, for its first men's T20I. Its capacity: 55,000.
