About

The West Africa Trophy is a regional invitational cricket tournament organized by the Nigeria Cricket Federation. Founded in 2023, the event brings together Associate Member nations for developmental purposes rather than serving as a direct qualifier for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

The competition features national sides rather than club franchises. The current 2025 edition includes Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Zambia. This line-up differs from the inaugural 2023 edition, which hosted Ghana instead of Zambia. Participation is determined by invitation from the host federation, with no promotion or relegation system in place.

Matches are played in the T20 International (T20I) format, meaning results count towards official ICC rankings. The structure consists of a round-robin group stage where each team faces the others three times. This is followed by knockout stages that include a final and a third-place playoff.

Nigeria has won both editions of the tournament. They defeated Rwanda in the finals of the 2023 and 2025 competitions, establishing themselves as the current holders and most successful team.

The event is distinct from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier, which determines World Cup spots based on performance. It also differs from the Africa T20 Cup, which was a club or franchise competition. The tournament serves as a platform for emerging teams to gain exposure and ranking points without the pressure of immediate qualification. The inaugural edition took place in Lagos from October 4–15, 2023. The 2025 edition was held in Abuja in December. Sponsors for the first edition included Dafabet, Sparkle, and Nigeria Breweries, but the tournament name remains "West Africa Trophy" without official naming rights integration.
