Ryger Stavanger

Ryger's clashes with Viking Stavanger Elite and Stavanger IF carry that weight still, because the club now standing across from them was once part of the same institution: Viking Håndball and Stavanger Idrettsforening merged their elite men's sections in 2000 to form what was then called Stavanger Håndballklubb.

In 2022, after Stavanger Aftenblad ran a public naming contest for the club, it re-emerged as Ryger Håndballklubb Stavanger. Ryger now play in the 1. Division, the second tier, working from scratch rather than from a record.

What the club does carry is a pipeline function for the region: academy graduates and former players such as Alexander Blonz, Ole Erevik, Gøran Johannessen, Kristian Bjørnsen and Mario Matic trace back through its predecessor structures, and Simen Revheim Gleditsch arrived in 2025 having come through Viking HK, one of the very clubs Ryger split from. Faroese international Trondúr Mikkelsen has also worn the shirt.

Matches are played at Stavanger Idrettshall, 2,300 of the 4,100 capacity seated, in the white and dark blue the club has carried since the rebrand. The name itself was put to a public vote — a small way of letting the city decide what to call the club it had already split in two once before.
