Nærbø IL went into the 2021–22 EHF European Cup final needing two legs to settle it against the Romanian side CS Minaur Baia Mare, and came through to lift the trophy. A year later the same club reached the final again, this time falling to RK Vojvodina, and along the way had to get past Runar Sandefjord in a semi-final decided on penalties. The two clubs have made a habit of meeting when the stakes are highest, even without a name for the fixture beyond the plain description locals use for any occasion of that size: a storkamp.

None of it explains why a club from a village on the Jæren coast, with no top-flight league title to its name, is known in Norwegian handball as The Jæren Sensation. The answer sits in the team sheet from that 2022 final: thirteen of the fifteen players were products of the club's own system, several of them born the same year. Among them were players who shared a surname with their coach, Rune Haugseng — a central back he had raised as his son, two left backs who were his nephews. He handed the reins to Tom-Eirik Skarpsno for the 2024/25 season, leaving a squad still built the same way it always had been.

There was a Norwegian Cup final too, in 2020, lost to Elverum Håndball. The section itself dates back to 1923, long before any of this was thinkable.
