Between 1998 and 2006 the club won the national championship six times, and it added ten Norwegian Cup titles between 1990 and 2007.
A tenth-place finish in 2009–10 sent Sandefjord into a relegation play-off against Oppsal, which it lost, and a season in the 1. Division followed. They finished bottom that season and went down anyway. A later return to the Eliteserien, in 2020, ended in relegation once more, and the club were back in the 1. Division for 2025/2026.
Locally the fixture that still matters is against IL Runar, played as the Sandefjord derby, with Viking TIF another old name from the same rivalry.
