Every meeting between Slovan and MRK Ljubljana carries the weight of a shared postcode: both clubs play in the Slovenian capital, and the fixture is known locally as the "mestni obračun" — the city derby.

The handball section grew out of a wider sports society that had started with football and only later branched into boxing, table tennis, basketball and, in 1949, handball. What followed took decades to show on the honours board: a Yugoslav league title in 1979/80, then a run to the final of the European Champions Cup the following season, where Slovan lost to SC Magdeburg.

Slovenian independence brought leaner years — a runner-up finish domestically in 1991/92, cup final defeats either side of the mid-1990s, and two stints winning the second-tier 1.B League before working back up. The breakthrough came only in 2024/25, when Slovan finally lifted the Slovenian Cup.

That trophy arrived alongside a reshaped dressing room. Uroš Zorman, the most capped player in Slovenia's national-team history, took over as head coach in 2024 while continuing to manage the national side. Months later, Jure Dolenec — the country's all-time leading scorer for the national team — signed as a player and took on the role of sports director, pairing a playing career still active with a hand in running the club.

Matches are played at Dvorana Kodeljevo, a hall holding 1,370 spectators, in the red and black associated with the club. With the cup finally won and Zorman and Dolenec both embedded in the club's direction.
