Slovenj Gradec

Slovenj Gradec sit fourth after the playoffs of the 2025–26 season in Slovenia's top handball division. The reference point for that gap is 2023–24, when they reached the Slovenian Cup final for the first time in twenty years and lost to Trimo Trebnje, 28:35.

Handball had been played under the club's roof since 1954, and for decades that meant RK Prevent, a name that carried the team through its best run in the 1990s. The club folded in 2011. What followed was not a wind-down but a restart: local players, coaches and supporters registered RK Slovenj Gradec the same year and rebuilt from the lower leagues, while the federation let them keep 1954 as the founding date, treating the new side as a continuation rather than a fresh entry in the record books.

The rivalry that still shapes the calendar predates all of this. Games against Gorenje Velenje are known as the Koroško-Šaleški derby.

Ivan Simonovič, capped for Slovenia at two World Championships and a European Championship runner-up in 2004, played his handball here before the collapse. The current squad's link to the national team runs through Vid Levc, who was part of the Euro 2022 selection.

The Sports Hall in Slovenj Gradec holds 1,200.
