Sooners

No fixture on the schedule carries the weight of Texas. The Red River Rivalry, played against the Longhorns, has long been the measure Norman sets itself against, sharper for being renewed every year regardless of either side's record. Inside the state there is a second front, the Bedlam Series against Oklahoma State, a quieter but no less felt argument between neighbours.

The program traces back to a single game on 14 December 1895, arranged by a student named John A. Harts. It grew, over the following century, into one of the sport's more decorated names: seven national championships, spread from 1950 to 2000, and fifty conference titles won across four different leagues as college football itself was reorganised around Oklahoma — the Southwest Conference, the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Big Eight, and the Big 12.

The Gaylord Family–Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman has grown alongside the team, its capacity now set at just over 80,000, though it has held more than 88,000 for a single game in the past. Crimson and cream have marked the Sooners since the program's early years, colours specific enough that the university has fixed them to exact Pantone shades.

What has not followed the football team is a professional life beyond it: no NFL side has ever carried the Sooners name, and the identity built since 1895 has stayed entirely within college football, tied to Norman and to the rivalries that define each autumn there.
