Tanzania U20

Kelvin John's name is the one people bring up first from 2019, when he finished top scorer of the CECAFA U-20 Championship with seven goals and Tanzania beat Kenya 1–0 in the final after the two sides had drawn 2–2 in the group stage. That win gave the Ngorongoro Heroes their first regional title since the tournament's inaugural edition in 1971. Five years later they beat Kenya again, 2–1 after extra time, to make it three CECAFA U-20 crowns in all; in between there was a runners-up finish in 2020, lost to Uganda 4–1 in the final, and an earlier final appearance back in 1975.

Kenya remains the team most associated with those matches. Beyond East Africa, progress has been harder to find: at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations the side has gone out at the group stage in both of its appearances, finishing bottom in 2021 against Ghana, Gambia and Morocco, and again in 2025 without a win against South Africa, Sierra Leone and Zambia. A FIFA U-20 World Cup place has not yet followed.

Home matches are shared between the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, which holds 60,000, and the smaller Chamazi Stadium, used more often for regional tournament football. The shirt is yellow, the shorts green and the socks blue, the same combination taken from the national flag that the senior Taifa Stars wear.
