DeMeco Ryans played linebacker for Houston before he ever coached there. Since 2023 he has paired with quarterback C.J. Stroud to bring the club back-to-back AFC South titles, in 2023 and 2024, adding to a division record that also reads 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019.
The franchise exists because the NFL took the Oilers away. When the team left for Tennessee to become the Titans, the league awarded Houston a new franchise to Bob McNair in 1999, and that absence is still the shape of the Texans' fiercest rivalry — older, in feeling, than anything built up against Dallas or the other AFC South sides. Play did not begin until 2002.
Ownership has stayed inside one family, passing from Bob McNair to Janice McNair and now to Cal McNair.
Before Ryans, before Stroud, the name fans of a certain age still reach for is Andre Johnson, the receiver who holds the club's marks for catches, yards and touchdowns.
