Western Australia

In March 1893, a side representing the young colony of Western Australia stepped out against South Australia for its first first-class fixture. The Western Australian Cricket Association had already existed for eight years by then, formed in November 1885, but it took until the 1947–48 season for the state to be let into the Sheffield Shield.

It has not looked short of ground since. Eighteen Sheffield Shield titles followed admission, along with seventeen One-Day Cup titles, a rate of success built largely on the WACA Ground in East Perth. The ground closed for redevelopment in 2019, sending the team across the river to Perth Stadium, before a return to the old home planned for 2025. The rivalry with South Australia, the opponent from that first match in 1893, has stayed the fixture that matters most, even without a name attached to it.

The nickname changed with the times. Western Warriors carried the side through the one-day era from 1995, gold shirt and black trousers replacing the white of the Shield game, before the state reverted to plain Western Australia in 2019.
