The One-Day Cup is Australia’s top-tier domestic limited-overs cricket competition. It was established in the 1969–70 season by the Australian Cricket Board, which is now Cricket Australia. This makes it the second country in the world to launch a domestic one-day contest, following England’s Gillette Cup in 1963. The tournament runs alongside the first-class Sheffield Shield as the primary limited-overs competition in the national pyramid.
Six state teams participate in the event: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania. There is no promotion or relegation; entry is determined by Cricket Australia. The current format features a single round-robin group stage where each side plays five matches. The top two teams in the standings advance directly to the final, bypassing semi-finals. Matches are played over 45 overs per side, a reduction from the traditional 50-over limit introduced in the 2023–24 season.
Western Australia holds the record for success with 17 titles, including a three-peat from 2021–22 to 2023–24. New South Wales follows with 12 titles, while Queensland has won 10 times. Victoria has secured seven victories. The competition has undergone numerous name changes due to sponsorship, recently reverting to the One-Day Cup after dropping its title sponsor. The trophy itself is named the Dean Jones Trophy, honouring the former Australian international player.
The structure differs significantly from the Sheffield Shield. While the Shield uses a double round-robin format over four days with bonus points, the One-Day Cup employs a single round-robin over one day. Standard List A points apply for wins and ties, though specific rule tweaks have adjusted bonus point applications in the 45-over format. The final is a single match, with no replays or return legs required.
