The **Top End T20 Series** is a Twenty20 cricket tournament held annually in Darwin. It operates outside the professional domestic pyramid, sitting below the Big Bash League and Sheffield Shield structures. Northern Territory Cricket organises the event with sanctioning from Cricket Australia.
Unlike standard domestic competitions, this series functions primarily as a pre-season development and showcase tournament. It takes place in August, during the Australian winter. This timing allows international teams to play matches during their off-season. The format consists of a group stage followed by semi-finals and a final.
The field of participants varies between nine and eleven teams. Entries include Big Bash League Academy sides such as the Adelaide Strikers Academy and Hobart Hurricanes Academy. Domestic representative teams like the Australian Capital Territory also compete. International squads join the fray, including the Bangladesh High Performance XI and Nepal. Other participants have included the Hyderabad Kingsmen Academy.
There is no promotion or relegation system within the competition. Participation is determined by invitation based on high-performance status and strategic partnerships. The tournament serves as a high-performance warm-up for the Big Bash League. It also provides a pathway for emerging talent to gain experience against diverse opposition.
The competition is distinct because of its hybrid composition of local, academy, and international sides. This structure promotes cricket in the Northern Territory globally. Notable winners include the Northern Territory Strike, Adelaide Strikers, and Perth Scorchers Academy. The winner of the inaugural 2022 edition remains unconfirmed. The event does not feed directly into the second tier but supports player development for higher-profile franchises.
