About

The Big Bash League is the premier professional Twenty20 (T20) franchise cricket competition in Australia. Founded in 2011 by Cricket Australia, it sits at the top tier of the Australian domestic cricket pyramid, replacing the previous state-based KFC Twenty20 Big Bash competition. The league operates as a closed system with no promotion or relegation; teams are licensed by Cricket Australia rather than earning their place through lower-tier performance.

The season format involves a single round-robin group stage where each of the eight teams plays 12 matches. The top four teams advance to a four-match knockout finals series. This series features a "double chance" for the top two ranked teams: the Qualifier, where the winner goes directly to the Grand Final and the loser drops to the Challenger match. The Knock-Out pits the third and fourth-ranked teams against each other, with the winner advancing to the Challenger. The winner of the Challenger match then advances to the single-match Grand Final to determine the champion.

Perth Scorchers are the most successful club in BBL history, having won six titles as of the 2025–26 season. In the previous season (2024–25), the Hobart Hurricanes won their maiden title by defeating the Sydney Thunder. The league is officially known as the KFC Big Bash League due to a long-standing naming rights sponsorship with KFC.

Notable reforms include the shift from state teams to city-based franchises in 2011. The league is distinct from other major T20 leagues due to specific rule innovations. These include the "Power Surge" rule, which reduces the mandatory powerplay to four overs and allows the batting team to activate a two-over "Power Surge" at any point after the 10th over. Team ownership is formally attributed to state cricket associations, although they operate as commercial franchises.
