The Big Bash League stands as the premier domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in Australia. Founded in 2011 by Cricket Australia, it superseded the state-based KFC Twenty20 Big Bash, establishing a new era for the sport within the nation. The league operates as the top tier of the Australian cricket pyramid specifically for T20 cricket, utilising a closed franchise system that ensures stability through the absence of promotion or relegation.
Eight city-based teams compete for the title, distinguishing the tournament from traditional state-based structures. The roster includes the Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers, and Sydney Thunder. The season structure comprises a double round-robin group stage wherein each side contests ten matches, culminating in a four-team finals series. This knockout phase features a Qualifier, Knockout, Challenger, and Final to determine the champion.
The Perth Scorchers hold the record for the most titles, having won six championships. They entered the 2025–26 season as the reigning champions, highlighting their dominance within the franchise model. The format is notable for its entertainment-focused approach and scheduling during the Australian summer months of December and January, contrasting with the winter seasons of other domestic competitions like the Sheffield Shield and Marsh One-Day Cup.
Individual records within the league demonstrate the high-scoring nature of the event. The Melbourne Stars previously set a record for the highest team total at 273 for two wickets. In terms of bowling, Sean Abbott holds the distinction of being the all-time leading wicket-taker in the competition’s history. The competition remains distinct in its reliance on city-based franchises rather than state associations, creating a unique identity within Australian sports.
