Zabrze sits on the edge of Upper Silesia's coalfield, and its sport still carries the name of the pits: the football club is The Miners, and so is the handball section that grew out of it. When Górnik Zabrze's handball department wanted a proper pipeline into its senior side, it did not stretch an existing squad thinner — in December 2016 it set up a dedicated development team, SPR Górnik Zabrze, built around players who were not yet ready for the top flight.

The senior team had already given the club something to live up to: two Polish championships, in 1989 and 1990, and three national cups between 1984 and 1990. The reserve side was never meant to chase that record. It plays in the I Liga, the second tier of Polish handball, where the point is minutes and games, not silverware, and it has none.

Matches are played at the Hala sportowa Pogoń Zabrze, on ul. Wolności. Colours — white, blue and red — date to 2013, when the section renamed itself from NMC Powen Zabrze to Górnik Zabrze to match the football club's identity, tying the two sports together under one shield.

Its home hall held just over 1,000 spectators.
