Lubin sits in Lower Silesia, and the mining company that works it, KGHM Polska Miedź, has put its name and its money behind the city's handball team since the 1980s. The club's own name carries the same idea: Zagłębie, the basin, and the nickname Miedziowe, the Copper Girls, both point back to the ore under the town rather than to anything invented for marketing.

Founded in 1982, the team plays at Hala RCS, and for most of the past fifteen years it has had little competition at home. Six Superliga titles between 2011 and 2025 tell only part of it; the Polish Cup record runs longer still, with eleven wins stretching from 2009 through to 2026, a habit of turning up for the final that few clubs in the country can match. European runs have been rarer — semi-finals in the EHF Cup and the EHF Cup Winners' Cup around the turn of the millennium stand as the high points abroad, well before the current run of domestic dominance took hold.

Bożena Karkut now leads a squad built around a mix of Polish internationals and South American signings, among them the Argentine international Malena Cavo. The men's football club across town has its rivalries clearly marked, against Miedź Legnica and Śląsk Wrocław, but the handball side has never needed a local enemy to define itself against; its contests with Wisła Płock and Górnik Zabrze settle the league table instead. Beneath the first team, the SMS Zagłębie Lubin academy keeps feeding players through, the surest sign of how deep the club's hold on the city runs.

Eleven domestic cups sit in the club's cabinet, one more than any other side in Polish women's handball has managed.
