In the Superliga, Zagłębie's name goes up against Ruch Szczypiorno Kalisz and Wisła Płock, and those matches carry the weight of the table more than any other date on the calendar.

The club grew up around KGHM Polska Miedź, the copper mining company that owns Zagłębie Lubin's multi-sport organisation, and the nickname "The Coppers" that follows the team into every away end. The handball section was founded in 1982.

Bożena Karkut has coached the side since 2000, and the Polish Cup record under her sits alongside the league one — eleven wins, most recently in 2026, with the club rarely going more than a season or two without adding to the count.

Domestically there is not much left to chase. Continentally, the story reads differently: semi-finals in the EHF Cup and the EHF Cup Winners' Cup came back in 2001 and 2002, and it took until the 2023/2024 season for Zagłębie to reach the EHF Champions League for the first time.
