«Berani»
The men who ran the Baťa shoe factories in Zlín put a hockey team together in 1929, and for decades the club carried the workforce's imprint in its name and in the nickname Ševci — the shoemakers — long before Berani took hold. It went through the identity changes the town itself went through: when Zlín became Gottwaldov under communist rule, the club played as TJ Gottwaldov, and it has since worn a string of sponsor names down to the current RI OKNA Berani.
On the ice, the club's best spell came either side of the 2000s: an Extraliga title in 2003–04, another a decade later in 2013–14, with runner-up finishes bracketing both. That run ended in 2022, when Zlín dropped out of the Extraliga after 42 straight seasons in the top flight. Winning the second-tier title back in 2022–23 was not enough to reverse it; Kladno beat them in the promotion playoff, and Berani have had to watch the Extraliga from below since.
What has kept the club's name current is what it has sent out rather than what it has brought home. Games against Kometa Brno and Olomouc are still billed as the Moravian derby. Whatever shirt it wears now, the team traces back to a factory floor in Zlín and workers who wanted a hockey club of their own.
