The Campeonato Amapaense, widely referred to as the Amapazão, serves as the premier professional football competition within the Brazilian state of Amapá. Organised by the Federação Amapaense de Futebol (FAF), the tournament operates at the summit of the regional pyramid, sitting directly below the national Brazilian league system. Founded in 1944, the competition transitioned from its amateur roots to a professional structure in the early 1990s, establishing its current format.
The league typically involves eight clubs competing in a single round-robin format during the initial phase. The four highest-placed teams progress to a knockout stage, where the semi-finals and final are decided through two-legged ties. While the standard format involves home and away legs, recent editions have occasionally utilised neutral venues for decisive matches. The competitive landscape is historically dominated by clubs from the capital, Macapá, and the city of Santana, with EC Macapá holding the record for the most titles.
Structural changes between tiers are enforced annually. The bottom two sides in the top flight face relegation to the Campeonato Amapaense Série B, while the champion and runner-up of the second tier secure promotion. Success in this domestic contest carries significant weight beyond the state borders, as the top two finishers earn entry into the Copa do Brasil, the Copa Verde, and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D. The 2026 edition concluded with Santos AP claiming the championship, adding to their growing list of regional honours.
