The Campeonato Brasiliense holds the status of the top-tier professional football league for the Federal District in Brazil. Known also as the Campeonato Candango, it sits at Level 1 of the state pyramid. The competition was founded in 1959 by the Federação Desportiva de Brasília, an organisation that has undergone several name changes over the decades, culminating in the current name, the Federação de Futebol do Distrito Federal.
Professionalism arrived in 1976, following brief professional editions in the mid-1960s. The season runs on a single round-robin basis where each team plays every other side once. The structure does not include a return leg. After this initial phase, the top four teams advance to a playoff stage known as the mata-mata. This knockout section features two-legged semifinals and a final played at a neutral venue.
Relegation and promotion operate straightforwardly. The bottom two teams in the regular season drop to the Segunda Divisão. There are no playoffs involved in this process. Conversely, the top two teams from the second tier rise to the First Division directly. The league has a distinctive feature regarding participation. The FFDF allows clubs from neighbouring states, specifically Goiás and Minas Gerais, to enter if their location is within 200 km of Brasília. This rule brings teams such as Luziânia and Unaí into the fold.
Success in the tournament yields access to national and regional contests. The champion and runner-up secure places in the Copa do Brasil and the fourth tier of the national league, the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D. Third and fourth-place finishers often earn spots in the Copa Verde, a regional tournament for the North and Center-West areas.
Historical dominance belongs to Gama, who have won the title fourteen times. Brasiliense follows with eleven victories, while Brasília has claimed eight championships.
