About

The Nicaragua Cup, currently branded as the Copa Primera, serves as the primary domestic knockout competition in Nicaraguan football. The tournament underwent a significant structural change when it was revived in 2019 as the Copa Primera, shifting organisational control from the Nicaraguan Football Federation (FENIFUT) to the Liga Nicaragua, which governs the league body. This modern iteration brings together 34 teams drawn from the Primera División, Liga de Ascenso, and Segunda División. The competition follows a single knockout entity, progressing through preliminary rounds, a Round of 32, a Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and a Final. Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and the Final are played over two legs, while earlier rounds are typically single matches.

Diriangén FC dominates the modern era, having won the Copa Primera in 2020, 2024, and 2025. The 2025 final saw Diriangén defeat Real Estelí 2–1. The competition sits as the top domestic cup, distinct from the league championships. Winning the cup does not grant qualification for CONCACAF competitions; Nicaraguan clubs qualify for the CONCACAF Central American Cup and Champions Cup based on Liga Primera performance. There is no promotion or relegation link between the cup and the league tiers.

The original Copa de Nicaragua was founded in 1966 and organized by FENIFUT. It was held intermittently until 2005, with notable gaps in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Diriangén FC is the most successful club in this era with five titles. The competition was abolished in 2005 before being revived 14 years later.
