About

The Vietnamese National Football Cup, known locally as the Cúp Quốc gia, stands as the country’s premier knockout tournament. Organised jointly by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF), the competition operates independently from the league structures. It begins with a qualifying round where V.League 2 sides compete alongside selected V.League 1 entrants. The format then shifts to a single-elimination series, moving through the Round of 16, Quarter-finals, and Semi-finals before reaching the final. Every fixture is played over one leg, with extra time and penalties deciding any drawn encounters.

Victory in this cup carries significant weight, granting the winner a place in the ASEAN Club Championship and a spot in the Vietnamese Super Cup against the league champion. The field of play usually includes 24 to 26 teams, drawing from the top two tiers of domestic football. While the league titles are contested in round-robin formats, the cup relies entirely on its knockout mechanics.

Historical success in the tournament is shared among several clubs. Công An Hồ Chí Minh City, Becamex Bình Dương, Sông Lam Nghệ An, and Hà Nội FC have each secured three titles. The most recent champion, however, is Công An Hồ Chí Minh City, who claimed the trophy in the 2025–26 campaign. Their earlier victories came in 1992 and during the 1999–2000 season. For the participating clubs, including Sanna Khanh Hoa, Thanh Hóa, Quảng Ninh, Bình Phước, Bình Định, and Long An, the cup offers a chance to distinguish themselves in a high-stakes environment. The tournament has operated since its inception in 1992, maintaining its status as a distinct and prestigious event within Vietnamese football.
