About

The Montenegrin Cup is the premier national knockout tournament for football clubs in Montenegro. Organised by the Football Association of Montenegro (FSCG), it serves as the country’s second-tier domestic trophy, sitting behind the Montenegrin First League championship. The competition was established in 2006 following the nation's independence, taking over from the previous regional systems. It brings together 16 teams: the full roster of the top-flight league alongside the six best performers from the second tier.

The format is a straightforward elimination path. The early stages, consisting of the Round of 16 and Quarter-finals, are decided in single matches. If a game ends level after 90 minutes, the winner is determined immediately by a penalty shootout, with no extra time played. The Semi-finals shift to a two-legged affair, requiring home and away fixtures. The culmination is a single match at a neutral venue for the Final. This decisive game includes extra time and penalties if the score remains tied after regular play.

A significant prize awaits the victor. The winner secures a place in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League. Should the cup champion have already earned European qualification through their league performance, that spot transfers to the runners-up. This system ensures the trophy consistently feeds into continental competition.

Historical dominance has been held by FK Budućnost, who have claimed the title five times. Their victories came in the 2012–13, 2018–19, 2020–21, 2021–22, and 2023–24 seasons. In the most recent edition, FK Mornar emerged as champions, securing the 2024–25 title with a 1–0 victory in the final. Notable moments include FK Čelik’s surprise win in 2011–12, where a second-tier side defeated a top-flight opponent, and Mihailo Perović’s hat-trick in the 2018–19 final. The highest attendance recorded for a final stands at 10,000 spectators during the 2007–08 campaign.
