About

Saudi Division 2 is the third tier of the Saudi Arabian football league system. The competition sits below the Saudi Pro League and the Saudi First Division League. It is organized by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF). The league was founded in 1976, with the inaugural season played in 1976–77. For the first two decades, the league consisted of regional champions. A major reform in 1996 introduced a league format comprising teams relegated from the First Division and qualifiers from a promotion tournament. The league has undergone significant expansion over the years. It started with 8 teams in 1996–97 and grew to 10, then 12, 14, and 20. Currently, the competition features 32 teams divided into two groups, Group A and Group B, containing 16 teams each. This format was adopted in the 2022–23 season. In the 2024–25 season, the participating clubs include Afif, Al Entesar, Al Gottah, Al Jeel, Al Loa, and Al Nairyah. The current champion is Al-Diriyah, who secured the title in the 2024–25 season. They defeated Al-Ula 1–0 in the final. Al-Diriyah previously won the title in 2012–13. The most successful clubs in the league's history are Al-Fateh, Al-Shoulla, and Al-Najma, each with 3 titles. Al-Fateh won in 1982–83, 1996–97, and 1998–99. Al-Shoulla claimed victories in 1981–82, 1986–87, and 2008–09. Al-Najma won in 1987–88, 2009–10, and 2022–23. Promotion and relegation rules have seen recent variations. In the 2022–23 and 2023–24 seasons, the top two teams from each group were promoted automatically to the First Division. The third-placed teams from each group played a two-legged playoff for a fifth promotion spot. For the 2024–25 season, the group winners promote directly, while the second-placed teams from each group play a two-legged playoff for promotion. Four teams are relegated from the Second Division to the Third Division, specifically the bottom two from each group. The competition serves as the primary bridge for clubs moving from the regional third tier to the professional first division.
