Islamic Solidarity Games 2022/23

The football tournament at the Islamic Solidarity Games is a standalone competition held every four years, distinct from continental championships. Organised by the Islamic Solidarity Sports Association in conjunction with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the event includes teams from multiple confederations, such as the AFC, CAF, and UEFA. The tournament operates independently of any league pyramid, meaning there is no promotion or relegation; nations qualify solely by invitation from OIC member states.

Conceived by Prince Faisal bin Fahd of Saudi Arabia in 1981, the inaugural Games took place in Mecca in 2005. While the initial edition featured senior squads, the men's football tournament has been restricted to Under-23 players since the 2013 Games in Konya, with each squad permitted up to three overage players. The standard format involves two groups of four teams, with the top sides advancing to semi-finals. Notable winners include Saudi Arabia, who won the first title in 2005, and Azerbaijan in 2017. Turkey claimed the championship in 2022 after defeating Saudi Arabia 1–0 in the final.

The competition has experienced interruptions, most notably the cancellation of the 2010 edition due to a political dispute between Iran and Saudi Arabia regarding the naming of the Persian Gulf. Recent iterations have seen variations in format; the 2025 Games in Riyadh staged a futsal tournament rather than the traditional 11-a-side football event. The tournament does not serve as a qualifier for major international tournaments, functioning instead as a standalone multi-sport fixture for participating nations.
