About

Liga Mayor Dominicana de Fútbol was a semi-professional football competition in the Dominican Republic.

It operated from 2002 until its closure in 2014, following the establishment of the fully professional Liga Dominicana de Fútbol. The federation created the league to replace the amateur Campeonato Nacional, which had run since 1970. While the new top tier enabled participation in CONCACAF competitions, this structure served as the second level of the national system.

The format of the tournament changed frequently throughout its existence. In 2010, eight teams played a single round-robin. The 2011-12 season featured five clubs in a triple round-robin, while the following year returned to eight teams in a double round-robin. The final 2014 season saw twelve teams split into two groups with a playoff final.

Moca FC holds the record for success during this era, winning nine titles. CD Pantoja secured five championships, and Don Bosco claimed four. The clubs currently listed in the competition page, such as Cibao and Delfines del Este, were founded for the professional era and did not compete in the Liga Mayor.

The league effectively functioned as the feeder for the professional division, though it did not directly feed the second tier in the traditional sense. It concluded its run when the federation shifted its focus entirely to the professional LDF. The competition is now defunct, marking the end of the semi-professional era in Dominican football.
