The Premier League stands as the apex of football in Eswatini, distinguishing itself from the National First Division through higher professionalism and access to continental competition. While the second tier operates directly under the national association, Premier League clubs must satisfy CAF Club Licensing requirements. Financially, the top flight commands significantly higher prize money and sponsorship revenue.
Administered by the PLE executive, the competition was established in 1971 by the national football body. The structure relies on a double round-robin format where each team plays every opponent twice. Currently comprising 14 teams, the league plans to expand to 16 participants for the upcoming season. This results in 26 matches per team. Unlike many domestic leagues, there are no championship play-offs; the team finishing first is crowned champion outright. The stakes are high below the summit, as relegation involves the bottom four teams dropping to the National First Division.
Movement between the tiers is rigorous. Promotion to the Premier League is determined by results in the second tier: the top two teams earn automatic promotion. The third, fourth, and fifth placed teams in the second tier compete in play-offs against the fourth, fifth, and sixth lowest Premier League teams. Winners of these play-offs secure promotion, ensuring up to four teams can move between the tiers in a single season. This structure maintains a dynamic flow of talent.
Mbabane Highlanders lead the historical standings with 13 titles, followed by Royal Leopards and Mbabane Swallows with 8 each. The current reigning champion is Nsingizini Hotspurs, who have secured consecutive titles in the 2024–25 and 2025–26 campaigns. The competition is currently known as the MTN Premier League following a sponsorship deal renewal in 2025. The league’s focus remains on domestic supremacy and securing the single continental berth reserved for the title holders.
