About

The Campeonato Sul-Mato-Grossense stands as the premier professional football league for the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Organized by the FFMS (Federação de Futebol de Mato Grosso do Sul), the competition traces its origins to 1979, established shortly after the region gained political separation from the larger state of Mato Grosso. The governing body itself was formed in Campo Grande on December 3, 1978, to manage local football independently from the northern federation based in Cuiabá.

The league serves as the foundational tier within the Brazilian football pyramid for the region. It acts as the primary gateway for clubs seeking entry into national competitions, specifically qualifying participants for the Copa Verde, Copa do Brasil, and Série D. Recent structural formats have seen ten teams compete in a single group stage played as a round-robin. After this initial phase, the competition moves to knockout rounds; the top two finishers advance directly to the semi-finals, while those ranked third through sixth contest quarter-finals. At the end of the season, the bottom two clubs face relegation to the Série B, with promotion spots awarded to the finalists of that lower division.

Operário Futebol Clube holds the record for success in the tournament, having secured fifteen titles as of 2026. Comercial follows as the second most successful side with nine championships. The competition is also characterized by significant financial support from the state government through Fundesporte, alongside the introduction of monetary prizes starting in 2025. Current participants include Águia Negra, Bataguassu, Corumbaense, Costa Rica, Cr Aquidauana, and Dourados Atlético, all vying for the regional crown.
