About

The Supercoppa Italiana is an annual football super cup competition organized by the Lega Serie A, the governing body for Italy's top professional football league. It was founded in 1988, with the inaugural match played on June 14, 1989, at the San Siro in Milan. The delay from its intended 1988 date was due to the Summer Olympics. The competition features the winners of the previous season's Serie A and the Coppa Italia; if the same team wins both, the Coppa Italia runner-up takes the second spot. Historically, it was a single match, but since 2023, it has been a four-team "Final Four" mini-tournament involving the Serie A winner, Serie A runner-up, Coppa Italia winner, and Coppa Italia runner-up. Matches are played without extra time, going directly to penalties if tied. The tournament is held in Saudi Arabia under a long-term agreement extending to 2029, having previously been hosted in Italy, the USA, Libya, China, and Qatar. Juventus holds the record with 9 titles, followed by AC Milan and Inter Milan with 8 each. The current holder is Napoli, having won the 2025–26 edition in December 2025. Unlike the Coppa Italia, which is a major domestic cup open to lower-division teams, the Supercoppa is an exclusive, short-format event for elite clubs, serving as a curtain-raiser for the new season. It has no promotion or relegation system. Title sponsors have included TIM, PlayStation 5, Frecciarossa, and EA Sports FC.
