About

The Zambia Super League operates at Level 1 of the Zambian football pyramid. Organised by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), it serves as the top-tier professional competition in the country. The league currently features 18 clubs playing in a double round-robin format. Each team contests 34 matches over a season that typically runs from August to May.

Qualification for continental competitions follows a direct path based on final league positions. The top two teams secure places in the CAF Champions League, while the next two qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup. This structure provides significant incentives for performance at the highest domestic level. Financial stakes are higher here than in the second tier, alongside international broadcasting rights handled by TopStar. The league does not enforce a strict foreign player quota or a salary cap, features that distinguish it from many other African leagues.

Promotion and relegation dynamics involve the bottom four teams dropping to the Zambia National League. Conversely, the top four sides from the second tier gain entry to the Super League. This movement ensures a competitive flow between the tiers. The competition distinguishes itself from the National League through major corporate sponsorship and local broadcasting limitations in the lower division.

Historical success is led by Nkana FC, which has won the title 13 times. Recent champions include Red Arrows, who won their third title in the 2023–24 season, and ZESCO United, with nine titles to their name. Power Dynamos are the current holders, having secured their eighth championship in the 2024–25 campaign. The league has undergone sponsorship changes, previously known as the Zamtel Premier League before MTN took over in 2018.

While the current season lists clubs such as Green Buffaloes and Green Eagles, the broader competitive landscape remains defined by the established hierarchy of titles and continental aspirations. The absence of player quotas continues to be a subject of debate within the football community.
