About

The Supercopa do Brasil stands as Brazil's premier domestic super cup. Officially known as the Supercopa Rei since 2024, the tournament honours the late Pelé. Organised by the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF), it sits distinctly alongside the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and the Copa do Brasil within the national football pyramid.

The competition determines its participants through league and cup performance. The reigning champions of the Brasileirão face the winners of the Copa do Brasil. This structure ensures that the nation's most successful team from the previous year challenges the current cup holder. Should one club secure both major honours in a single season, the Brasileirão runner-up steps in to replace the cup winner, guaranteeing two top-tier sides contest the final.

Unlike many international equivalents, the format is brief and decisive. A single match takes place at a neutral venue. Crucially, there are no extra time periods. If the main 90 minutes end in a draw, the result is decided immediately by a penalty shootout. This approach eliminates the need for replays or second legs, offering a swift conclusion to the season's opening fixture.

Flamengo holds the record for success, claiming four titles in the revived era. Their victories in 2020, 2021, 2025 and 2026 outpace their rivals. Palmeiras finished as runners-up in 2024, while Corinthians secured a historic win in 1991 and contested again recently. Atlético Mineiro won in 2022, and São Paulo claimed the trophy in 2024. Grêmio remains the inaugural champion from 1990, defeating Vasco da Gama in the first-ever edition.

The competition paused for nearly a decade after 1991 before returning in 2020. Its revival has seen it become an annual staple, providing a high-stakes clash before the league campaign begins. The renaming to Supercopa Rei marked a significant moment, celebrating the legacy of Brazilian football's most iconic figure.
