Cob Ramblers moved further clear of the mid-table pack with a 3-1 victory away to Finn Harps in the First Division. The result extends their four-game unbeaten run and puts them three points above the hosts with a game in hand. The visitors carried their confidence from last week's 2-0 win over Trinity United straight into this fixture.
It was the visitors who struck first when D. McCormick found the net in the fourth minute. To be fair, the goal came from a period of sustained pressure rather than a moment of individual brilliance. R. Gourdie doubled the advantage just five minutes later, capitalising on a defensive error that Finn Harps have been guilty of all season.
The home side pulled one back through A. Adenopo in the 30th minute, and for a while it looked like they might salvage something. And here's the thing — the momentum shifted entirely when S. Bradley converted a penalty in the 49th minute. By then, the match was effectively over, and the visitors were playing to see out the result.
Finn Harps dominated possession at 57 per cent but could only muster three shots on target compared to Cob Ramblers' six. They registered 83 attacks to the visitors' 81, yet the away side were far more clinical in front of goal. It was a pattern that has defined this season for the league's lower half — territory without penetration.
The away end never stopped throughout the contest, and their support helped keep Cob Ramblers composed when the home side pushed forward. C. Harkin received a yellow card in the 82nd minute as frustration mounted among the home players. Finn Harps remain rooted to 10th place with just 22 points from 30 games.
Cob Ramblers now sit fourth with 42 points, and this result means they hold every card in their own hands for a top-four finish. The hosts' five consecutive defeats paint a stark contrast to the visitors' recent resilience. This was not a spectacle, but it was a result that matters.
