Athlone Town secured a 2:0 victory away at Wexford in the First Division's Regular Season round 28 on Friday evening. The result moved the visitors up to sixth place, three points clear of their hosts in the table. It was a match decided by moments rather than sustained dominance, and to be fair, both sides had chances to take the lead.
The opening goal arrived in the thirty-fourth minute when P. Ferry converted a penalty. K. Dignam had been booked just before the spot-kick, and the visitors took advantage of the break. By then, Wexford had already set a physical tone, and the yellow cards kept coming for both sides.
Substitutions began to shape the game from the fifty-fifth minute. A. Connolly, P. Ferry, and R. Lyons came off for Wexford, while G. Hodgins and R. McCourt joined the hosts' side. The visitors brought on R. Lyons and P. Ferry, though the latter had already scored, so the changes suggest fatigue rather than tactical overhaul.
The match tightened in the final third. M. Murphy received a red card in the seventy-fourth minute, leaving Wexford with ten men for the closing stages. C. Cleary added the second goal in the ninetieth minute, and the visitors held on to extend their unbeaten run. And here's the thing: the red card didn't collapse the game, but it did shift the balance.
Both teams shared possession evenly at 50 per cent, but the shot count told a different story. Wexford managed four shots off target and two on target from 75 attacks, while Athlone Town registered five shots on target from 55 attacks. The visitors were more clinical, and the statistics reflect that efficiency.
The result leaves Athlone Town on 40 points in sixth place, while Wexford remain on 30 points in eighth. Three games remain in the regular season, and the gap between them matters less than the momentum each side carries into those fixtures.
