Match report
Iceland and Estonia played out a 1-1 draw in their UEFA Nations League League C - 1 fixture on Friday. The result leaves both sides with one point from their opening match of the campaign.
Andri Guðjohnsen gave the hosts the lead just before the break. His goal came in the forty-fifth minute, and it looked as though the home side might take all three points. And here's the thing — the momentum didn't last.
Estonia equalised through Maksim Paskotsi in the sixty-fourth minute. The visitors had a chance to go ahead shortly after when Kevor Palumets missed a penalty in the fifty-second minute. To be fair, that miss changed the complexion of the second half entirely.
Iceland controlled possession with sixty-two per cent of the ball and registered seven shots on target. Estonia were more direct, with five shots on target from eight attempts. The home side won seven corners to three, but shots don't always translate into goals.
By then the match had settled into a pattern neither side could break. Yellow cards for Karol Mets, Rasmus Peetson and Stefán Teitur Thórdarson showed the tension building as the game wore on. Substitutions came thick and fast from both benches.
We had backed Iceland to win with sixty-five per cent confidence before kickoff. The prediction didn't come true — and it was that missed penalty that ultimately decided it. Both sides now sit level on points after one game.
