Juventus — União São João: 1:1, Copa Paulista

Juventus and União São João played out a 1:1 draw in the Copa Paulista quarter-finals on Monday night. The home side took an early lead, but the visitors levelled in the second half to earn a point at the Estádio. It was a tight affair with plenty of cards flying, and neither side could find a winner despite creating enough chances to break the deadlock.

Juventus went ahead in the eighth minute and held the advantage for most of the game. União São João pulled level in the sixty-seventh minute, and the rest of the match was a battle of wills. The home side had the better of possession at 53 per cent and managed five shots on target to their opponents' three, but the visitors were more clinical when it mattered.

The referee was busy throughout, showing nine yellow cards in total. Juventus received five and União São João four, with three of them coming in the closing stages of the first half alone. It was a physical contest from the start, and the tension never really eased even after the equaliser.

For Juventus, the draw means their unbeaten run comes to an end after a series of mixed results. They lost their previous meeting with União São João 0:1 in September but bounced back with a 5:0 win over Oeste before struggling against Pau-lista and Primavera. The forecast had tipped the home side for victory with 86 per cent confidence, and that call was correct in the broader sense—Juventus were the stronger side and deserved the point they earned.

União São João will be pleased with the result away from home. They had lost to Juventus earlier in September but improved significantly, drawing with Pirasica-ba and Noroeste before their trip to São Paulo. Their defense held firm and they showed enough composure to take something back from the Estádio.
