About

The Copa Paulista is a professional football cup competition organized by the Federação Paulista de Futebol in São Paulo, Brazil. It stands as the second-most important state competition, following the Campeonato Paulista Série A1.

Its distinction lies in its participant base. While the main state championship features top-tier clubs, this tournament primarily gathers teams from the lower tiers of the state system (Série A2, A3, and A4) that do not participate in the Brazilian national leagues. It also allows reserve teams from national league clubs to compete. This mix provides revenue and a pathway to national competitions for smaller entities.

The format involves 23 to 26 teams divided into regionalized groups. Teams play a double round-robin within their groups. The top four teams from each group advance to a knockout stage comprising the Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and Final. These matches are played over two legs. Tie-breakers prioritize better overall campaign performance, followed by penalty kicks.

The winner gains the right to choose between entering the Copa do Brasil or the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D for the following season. This qualification route makes it significant for clubs outside the national pyramid.

The competition was founded in 1962 but was reorganized and officially established in its current continuous format in 1999. It has undergone several name changes, including Copa Coca-Cola and Copa Futebol Interior, before adopting the current name in 2008. Historically, Paulista FC and XV de Piracicaba are the most successful clubs, each with three titles. Atlético Monte Azul is the current defending champion after winning the 2024 edition.

Unlike the main state league, this cup focuses on providing opportunities for clubs that typically lack access to higher levels of football. It serves as a crucial stepping stone for those seeking national exposure. The structure ensures that regional performance determines advancement, rather than just financial prowess. This approach helps balance the competitive landscape within São Paulo football.
