Mauro — known to everyone at Palma Travassos as Maurinho — scored more than 85 goals for Comercial , and no one has come close since. He belongs to a club that merchants in Ribeirão Preto put together in 1911, calling it Commercial Football Club, and which nearly disappeared twenty-five years later: the Depression reached the interior of São Paulo, the football department was suspended, and the club came back in 1954 by merging with Paineiras Futebol Clube.

The nickname arrived before the trouble did. A tour through Brazil's north and north-east in 1920 went well enough that the club returned as Leão do Norte — the Lion of the North — and the lion became the mascot.

Of the four titles, the one that mattered most was the Seletiva da CBD in 1977, because winning it opened the door to the national first division. Comercial went up in 1978 and finished 42nd.

A legal manoeuvre in 2010 handed Comercial the Série A2 place that Olé Brasil held. In 2025 the club played in Série A4, and in September its ground hosted the first match in Brazilian football to use Football Video Support.
