XV de Piracicaba

The Barão da Serra Negra is a municipal ground, opened on 4 September 1965 and named after Francisco José da Conceição, the first and only Baron of Serra Negra. It has never carried a sponsor's name, and the only substantial work done to it in recent decades came in 2007, when the pitch was relaid and a drainage and automatic watering system went in underneath. Piracicaba calls it, simply, the Barão.

The club that plays there was assembled in 1913 out of two existing local sides, Esporte Clube Vergueirense and 12 de Outubro. The man who brought them together, Carlos Wingeter — a National Guard captain and a dentist, later the first president — attached one condition to the merger: the new club would be named for 15 November, the date the Republic was proclaimed in Brazil. Hence Esporte Clube XV de Novembro de Piracicaba, and hence a founding day chosen to match the name.

The nickname came from elsewhere, from a local figure rather than a national one: Nhô Quim, a peasant character popular in Piracicaba who stood for the typical countryman of interior São Paulo. He is still the mascot. The shirt has stayed black-and-white striped throughout.

Six Campeonato Paulista Série A2 titles make XV the record holder in the second tier of the state championship. The highest the club has climbed was second place in Série A1 in 1976, under Romeu Rípoli, who went on to take the side to eighth in the Brazilian championship the following year and later served as club president. More recently the Copa Paulista has been the club's competition: won in 2016, again in 2022, and again in 2025.

Gatão is the name that still carries furthest here — more than 400 matches and over 200 goals for XV, a state championship winner twice with Corinthians, and picked for the São Paulo selection that played the opening match at the Maracanã in 1950.
