Kidderminster Harriers took a 1:0 win over Eastleigh in the National League's second round on Saturday, a result that keeps both sides within touching distance of each other at the top of the table. The hosts sat eighth on three points from three games, while Eastleigh occupied tenth with two wins and a defeat. By then, the match had already shown its character — a grudging affair where nothing came easy.
The first half was a battle of yellow cards more than chances. L. Walker went off early at 27 minutes, followed by R. Johnson at 33 and R. Faakye at 35, with T. Eweka completing the quartet at 37. Neither keeper had much to do, but the fouls told a different story — 16 for the hosts against 14 for the visitors. And here's the thing: when the cards pile up like that, the game tends to stutter.
What changed things came late. L. Amantchi struck at 77 minutes, then added another at 89 — though the final score stood at 1:0, which is how these things sometimes go in the lower leagues. The substitutions came thick and fast: C. Dolan at 62, R. Devine at 67, O. Hawkins at 69, then a double change at 74 with L. Walker and Z. Brown. Eastleigh brought on T. Eweka at 83 and M. Dickov at 86, while I. Bakare and D. Davis picked up yellows at 87 and 89 respectively.
The numbers tell a simple enough tale. Kidderminster had 115 attacks to Eastleigh's 85, with 10 corners against 2. Shots accuracy sat at 0.43 for the hosts, 0 for the visitors — three shots on target, none off, and not a single save to record. Possession was even at 0.5 apiece, which is about as fair as it gets when neither side really dominated.
To be fair, the result means both clubs stay in the mix. Kidderminster move to 11 points from six games, Eastleigh remain on 10 after their sixth outing. The visitors had won two and lost two before this, while the hosts had three wins, two draws and one defeat. Neither side is pulling away, and neither is falling behind.
