Match report
Mozambique cruise past Sudan in Group Stage qualifier
Mozambique secured a comfortable 4-1 victory over Sudan in the second round of the African Cup of Nations qualification group stage on Monday. The hosts let their squad depth show, with Chamito Alfandega netting twice to lead the scoring. Things came to a head early when Witiness Quembo found the net in the twenty-fourth minute, setting the tone for what followed.
Alfandega doubled the advantage shortly after the interval, converting his chance in the forty-sixth minute. Ricardo Martins Guimarães then made the difference with a well-taken goal in the fifty-eighth minute before Alfandega added his second from open play in the sixty-second. Sudan pulled one back through Yasin Hamed from the penalty spot in the eighty-eighth minute, but that price had gone by then.
Both managers shuffled their units throughout the contest. Mozambique brought on Gildo Vilanculos in the twenty-third minute and Bheu Januário just before the break, while Sudan responded with three changes around the hour mark. Alfonso Amade and Ricardo Martins Guimarães both picked up yellow cards for the hosts, while Ahmed Yousif Tabanja and Ammar Kamaleldin Taifour were cautioned for the visitors.
The statistics tell the story of a one-sided affair. Mozambique dominated possession at 65 per cent and registered 122 attacks compared to Sudan's 67. The hosts landed five shots on target from ten attempts, while Sudan managed four on target. Both sides collected two yellow cards each, and neither saw a red card.
The result keeps Mozambique in contention as they build momentum ahead of the group stage conclusions. Sudan's campaign faces an uphill battle after dropping points away from home. Cup football has its own rules, and the hosts showed they can spring a surprise when it matters most.
